About Tatami

Unlike anywhere in the world, a culture unique to Japan, this method of Japanese room flooring took root in the Nara period. Rush stalks are woven in to a sheet which is then sewed on to a straw mat making a tatami. Ancient floor coverings like Mushiro, "Goza" and "Komo" were all called tatami.

Going back to Japanfs oldest historical records there are descriptions like [ Sugadatamiyae] and [Kawatatamiyae].

In recent years wood flooring has increased so just as in the picture, light and versatile "Okitatami" have become popular.

(1) New Tatami

We make new tatami for new construction, remodeling, or when the tatami becomes weak and you feel depth when you step.

(Tatami should be replaced every 50 or 60 years.)

(2) Surface Replacement

We keep the straw mat and replace only the surface "Goza" woven rush weed mat.

(Tatami should be resurfaced 7 to 8 years after being reversed.)

(3) Flipping Tatami

Due to sun fading, wear and damage the tatami surface "Goza" may need to be peeled of and flipped over.

(The "Goza" covering should be flipped every 3 to 5 years.)

Tatami can be used for a lifetime if you maintain them properly. Enjoy the changing texture of the tatami over the years. For those interested in tatami, welcome.

Although at the moment we are unable to speak English.

How about a custom-made mini-tatami mat as a souvenir?

We will consult with you on thickness and size.
